Somewhere between design and development

After it had stagnated for a few years I took on the job of webmaster at my running club back in 2005. I redesigned it from a dark a moody theme with some horrific animated gifs and centred text into a popular and welcoming site that I endeavor to update weekly.

Design

The club colours are a rather harsh yellow with dark blue trim so I inverted the colour scheme to make use of the blue and leave the yellow for the trim. A lot of beginners are intimidated by the thought of joining a running club so the design needed to be kept looking informal and light. There is an annual Half Marathon that the club organises that needs to be easy to find for the entrants without affecting the ability of the members to get to what they need to.

Technical

I used Joomla! as the CMS for this when it outgrew my hand-rolled templating system and others needed access to update pages. A phpBB bulletin board was set up but it was overkill for the club and it seems that people are happier using a group on Facebook instead.

Newsletters

Up until September 2009, I produced the running club newsletters which gave me some simple regular practice at layout and design. Considering it's a club of about 150 regular runners, the newsletter regularly managed to get thirty pages a month and the layout and editting would take most of a day. I have passed the newsletter on to another club member with some guidance and photos from me.
